ダイソンの開発キーマンにインタビュー 日本市場攻略の秘訣やカリスマ創業者の魅力を語る（英文付き）
Ｑ．先日、ダイソン氏が電気自動車について２０２１年にも日本市場に投入することを明らかにしました。クルマの開発はダイソンにとってどういうチャレンジですか？
(Mr. Dyson recently announced that he was working on electric vehicles and might be introduced in 2021 in Japanese market. What is the development of automobile to Dyson?)
「非常にエキサイティングな試みです。実際に開発担当者たちを知っていますが、みんなとても興奮しています。彼らはお客様の反応を楽しみにしています。ダイソンはこの試みを通してたくさんのスキルを身につけています。我々がこれまで様々な開発分野で培ってきた技術を、どのような形で電気自動車に応用できるのかを模索しているところです。これ以上話せないのは大変恐縮ですが」
(Well, it represents a very exciting challenge. I know the people working on that particular project and they are all very excited about what they are doing. And just looking forward to seeing how the consumers look at their technology, what their reaction is. We've learnt some new skills as business. Most importantly, we are looking at how we apply what we already know across all of our technology areas into that category too. But I'm sure you know I can't say anything about it.)
Ｑ．創業者のジェームズ・ダイソン氏はどういうリーダーですか？ ポールさんにとってどのような存在ですか？
(When you look at Sir James Dyson, what kind of leader or person is he? And what is he to you?)
「彼は私にとって最高の師匠です。私だけでなく、全てのエンジニアが彼からインスピレーションをもらっていると思います。彼は未だにエンジニアとたくさんの時間をともにします。我々が直面している問題を見てくれますし、進行中のデザイン案件にコメントも出してくれます。そこはこう考え方を変えるべきではないのか、といったチャレンジも投げかけてくれます。我々の考え方を深化させるような指摘をしてくれるのです。リーダーとしては非常に現場重視で、先頭からしっかり引っ張ってくれるタイプです。私は常に彼の意見を求めて相談に行きますし、彼はいつでもRDD（Research, Design and Development＝研究開発室）に来て、試行錯誤していることを細部まで見てアドバイスしてくれます。どうすれば（試作品が）機能するのか興味深く観察し、豊富な経験と知識を共有してくれます」
(He's been a great mentor and an inspiration to me, and to all of the engineers. He spends a lot of time working with the engineers still, inside RDD everyday, looking at our products, discussing the designs, challenging us in a great way to think differently. A lot of people take their inspiration from him. He is very much hands-on, he leads from the front, and he wants to be involved with everything. I regularly go and seek his input on some designs and he'll look at the designs, especially the sections and looking inside what machine it is to really understand how things work, and make suggestions from his experience and sharing that knowledge and experience that he has amassed.)
